Sea Monster Rotacrylic Pen Blanks

So what is a sea monster anyway? The open ocean can be a lonely place. Stuck on a ship, miles from shore with nothing but water in all directions--including straight down --one cannot help but wonder what lurks in those mysterious depths. Often those wonderings (and sometimes with a little help from nature) took the form of the imaginary monsters of the deep that we have all come to know through our myths and legends.... The Kracken, The Cetus, The Lusca, The Sea Serpent, The Giant Squid...Nessie.

But we now know that these creatures that once captured our collective imagination, were really nothing more than our own misinterpretation and exaggeration... Or were they? The blank depicts an actual denizen of the deep. It is a rendition of a real-life "viperfish" (genus Chauliodus) that makes it's home in the bathypelagic zone of Earth's oceans.

This amazing piece of workmanship involved many hours of design cutting on a CNC, including thousands of lines of code. Once cut, the upper blank was re-cast, in the contrasting resin. The matching blank for the other barrel has no image.

The blank is best on a larger diameter pen (Gent, Majestic, etc)  Because of the double casting and the intricate design, there is a chance of encountering a small bubble. If you do, it can easily be filled with some of the sanding dust and CA or epoxy. Painted tubes are recommended.

I love this blank. It turned nicely and there were no bubbles at all. I can see why a big pen is recommended. I put it on an Atrax and it look great, but a bigger pen would, I think, show off the "Sea monster" a bit better (the "Sea Monster" would pass as a dragon, which is what I thought it was).

The colors of the blank are amazing--I don't get tired of looking at it. The pictures in no way do it justice. I like it so much that this pen may be a keeper.

I'll surely be buying more Rotocrylics in the future!
