Red and Black Cumberland Ebonite: Ebonite is a pleasure to work with and the Cumberland is a dense, high-quality material. I’ve noticed the German ebonite feels more substantial and has a stronger smell after being worked. Fortunately, the smell dissipates with time and should not deter anyone from working with it. My one complaint is that the blanks I received had an obvious bend to them which was not a problem for me but did take extra time and effort to turn so they were strait. The color initially appears matte black as in the picture but polishes nicely and becomes a subtle, deep red and black grain which appears quite elegant. I do not use kits so much of the process involves cutting threads. I did have problems with the 16M x 1 size but this was more likely the fault of the tap and die than the material. It easily took threads from the other sizes (14M x 1, 14M x .75, 10M x .75 and 7.4M x .5). The Red and Black Cumberland produced a beautiful pen and I am very happy with the results and the material. The extra cost of ebonite compared to some other materials is more than worth it if you are going for that classic look and feel.
