Berea Precision Pen Mandrel Shaft
A mandrel is a round steel rod that you slide the wood blank with the brass tube inserted onto. For the Berea Arbor System, two sizes are available - A & B.
The A mandrel (sometimes called a "7mm" mandrel) which is 0.247 +0 -0.002 inches in diameter and and other mandrel which has a larger diameter, the B mandrel. This is 0.291 +0 -0.002 inches in diameter. The B mandrel is used on some kits because the thicker diameter helps prevent whip while turning and allows for a much better result. This shaft will work with either of the Morse taper drivers, but only with the like size (A or B) bushings.
Hi Daniel, This will work on most all mini and midi lathes used for pen turning, but on the Micro Penpal lathe I can't advise you. We don't handle that lathe, and there could be some restrictions on it that we are not familiar with. PSI (the maker of the penpal) advises using this mandrel as a replacement - https://www.exoticblanks.com/replacement-mandrel-rod-for-the-elc-flc-mandrels.html. I hope that helps!
Hi Hank! Berea's A mandrel is the standard 7mm size. The B mandrel is a thicker rod, which helps in preventing warping. However, the B mandrel requires a larger thruput hole in the bushings (ie Berea's "B" bushings). Standard bushings will not fit. You can see the matching knurled nut for these mandrels here - https://www.exoticblanks.com/brass-knurled-nut.html
