These 5" rods are a strong 20mm (.8 inches) in diameter.
The material is commercially produced polyresin. It turns fine for me, comes off in ribbons. However, I have been turning for 30 years, specializing in plastics. If I had not turned it before, I would use a carbide tool, with a negative rake cutter. Hold it parallel to the floor and cut just a tad above center. Ed
