Cotinus Obovatus the American Smoketree is part of the cashew family and was once used for making a yellow dye. It was used to such an extent during the Civil War that the species would of have now been considered an endangered species. But the dye is no longer being commercially used and the plant has recovered.

The wood is fairly straight grained, with a bright golden yellow heartwood.  - very similar in appearance to osage orange.but with more grain.

These Chittum Pen Blanks are cut from logs and may vary slightly but all are approx  18mm square.
