Stabilized Wood Pen Blanks
Stabilized Wood Pen Blanks
Stabilizing is a process that impregnates the wood pen blank or burl blank with stabilizing resins and renders it into an ideal plastic like turning blank. The finished turned blanks have a vibrant grain and a surface with a brilliant and durable shine.
During this process, a piece of wood that might not have been able to be turned into a pen has been transformed. It has been changed with high pressure into something that is not only useable, but a premium look.
Our stabilized wood pen blanks may be stabilized with either a clear or colored resin. Both of these can end up with beautiful pens which wouldn't have been possible without having done the stabilization process to the wood.

Plum Wood Pen Blanks
Plum wood can come in a variety of colors! Because the tree is small, swirled or irregular grain, as well as knots are common. Plum has a fine texture with a close grain making it an easy wood to turn. The wood gives a pleasant aroma reminiscent of pumpkin or squash when machined. Because of limited availability, plum tends to be expensive, for a domestic wood.

Persimmon Pen Blanks
Persimmon is a member of the Ebony genus (Diospyros), and is sometimes called White Ebony.
Scientific name: Diospyros Virginiana, found in the Eastern United States. The wood is hard and dense, color will tend to darken with age. It is straight-grained, with a medium coarse texture. It turns easily but tools dull quickly. Because it is not widely available, it tends to be expensive for a domestic wood.
Has excellent shock and wear resistance making it very suitable for penmaking. It may experience significant movement, so finishing techniques should take this into consideration.

Sassafras Pen Blanks
Medium to light brown in color, sometimes with orange or olive hue, tends to darken with age. Bears a strong resemblance to Chestnut or black ash. Grain is straight, but coarse with an uneven texture. Easy to work and good dimensional stability once it is dry. Glues, stains and finishes well! Aroma is similar to root beer.
Sassafras has been reported as a sensitizer - can cause some people discomfort. Wear protective breathing apparatus.

Spalted Maple Pen Blanks - Stabilized Jumbo
Spalted Maple is not a specific species of Maple, but rather a type that has begun initial stages of decay. The partial decay, called spalting, gives the wood dark contrasting lines and streaks and creates a beautiful pen blank. These jumbo pen blanks are cross-cut and have been stabilized.

Maple Pen Blanks - Dyed & Stabilized Purple

These are hard maple where the purple dye did not completely saturate the blank. There is some natural color wood showing, which gives a character to the finished pen.
