Exotic Wood Pen Blanks

Direct from the Holy Land!  We purchased over a thousand pen blanks from the Holy Land and we have individually graded each blank. These are "Grade A", which means that there is a grain pattern through all or most of the blank and it has no checks or chips that will interfere with making the pen.

Tamarind is one of the world's rarest and most beautiful woods. These blanks have a creamy to tan coloring and a lovely spalting line and texture.  Stabilizing is a process that impregnantes the wood or burl with resins and renders it into an ideal / plastic like turning blank. The finished turned blanks has a vibrant grain and a surface with a brilliant and durable shine.

Bimble Box, (Eucalyptus Populnea) is a species of Australian eucalyptus that is found in central and coastal areas of Queensland to northern New South Wales. The tree can reach up to 25 meters tall. The wood of the Bimble Box is fairly dense and hard.  It has a golden honey heartwood, with a hint of creamy tan sapwood near the center. Blanks come waxed and are non stabilized. As with all burls, there may be small voids.

Red Mallee (Eucalyptus oleosa, E. socialis) is a species of Australian eucalyptus that is common in Australia. Red Mallee is prized for its heavy concentration of burl eyes and vivid color and figure. This burl features a  distinctive mix of pink, red, and violet heartwood with contrasting white sapwood. Mallees are usually smaller and shorter than trees, and grow multiple smaller-diameter stems from a common root system. Because of this, most mallee species are ill suited for lumber, though they do have a propensity for burl growths that can be harvested and used for turning pens, bowls and other small objects.

Brown Malle (Eucalyptus dumosa, E. viridis) is a species of Austrian eucalyptus that is common in Australia. The heartwood is generally medium brown, sometimes with an orange cast. Pale yellow to gray sapwood is sharply demarcated from heartwood.. Mallees are usually smaller and shorter than trees, and grow multiple smaller-diameter stems from a common root system. Because of this, most mallee species are ill suited for lumber, though they do have a propensity for burl growths that can be harvested and used for turning pens, bowls and other small objects. As opposed to Red Mallee Burl, Brown Mallee Burl doesn’t refer to a specific tree of the same name, but rather describes burl pieces from various Eucalyptus species where the wood itself is brown in color

Red Coolabah Burl (Eucalyptus coolabah, Eucalyptus microtheca) comes from one of the hardest and strongest trees in the world. This species is widely distributed over northern Australia, commonly found along rivers and heavy soils of flood plains. It was made famous in the song, "Waltzing Matilda". This premium exotic burl wood offers unmatched color and grain patterns. The heartwood color that ranges from brownish-pink to darker reddish-brown usually accompanied a swirling mix of eyes. Thin sapwood is grayish white.

Few woods are as consistent and vibrant a yellow as Yellowheart. Commonly referred to as Pau Amarello— which is Portuguese for “yellow wood". Yellowheart is normally easy to work with hand or machine tools and makes a brilliantly yellow pen that pairs very well with the darker platings.

Lacewood has conspicuous flecking that gives this wood its namesake. The wood itself is reddish-brown with grey or light brown rays, which result in a lace pattern when quartersawn. Overall it is a fairly easy wood to work with, taking glues, stains, and finishes well.

An immensely popular imported African hardwood, Bubinga may be loved as much for its quirky name as it is for its strength and beauty, it is often used for high-end woodworking projects. Heartwood ranges from a pinkish red to a darker reddish-brown with darker purple or black streaks. Sapwood is a pale straw color and is clearly demarcated from the heartwood. Bubinga has a close resemblance to rosewood and is often used in place of those more expensive and rare woods. Bubinga can feature a host of stunning grain figures, such as flamed, pommele, and waterfall, which make this wood truly unique.

Bog oak was originally discovered in the British Isles, with Ireland yielding the greatest amount. Now, although discoveries of this wood are still rare, there are several parts of the world where buried trees are being unearthed.  

The attraction of Bog oak is most notably it's color--it is black or very dark brown.  Scientists say the older the oak (up to 5000 years old), the more consistently black it is likely to become.  The other attraction is the age--these trees were all buried over 2500 years ago.  

ExoticBlanks searches for Bog oak that is as dark as possible and is "square".   The blanks are at least .75 inches square and at least 5" long and are priced per each.  They will undoubtedly make beautiful pens "with a story that can pre-date the Roman Empire".

Sometimes called amaranth, this colorful Latin American hardwood is tremendously popular for pen, blanks, furniture and other designs that call for a unique splash of color. In addition to its coloration, purpleheart has excellent strength and weathering properties, and can be used in applications where strength or durability is important—a wood with both form and function!

Ziricote is a prized tropical hardwood that makes great pen blanks. It has a medium to dark brown color with black lines resembling a landscape pattern. It's easy to work with, and used for making musical instruments, gun and knife handles, furniture, and fine turnings.

African Blackwood is an excellent option for pen blanks if you desire a wood that is black or almost black, but at the same time robust and dense. It is a superior alternative to genuine ebony, as it is less prone to cracking or warping. African Blackwood is also a popular choice for creating custom pool cues, woodwind instruments, carving, knife handles, and walking sticks. However, it is particularly famous for being one of the best woods for turning, as it can be polished to a stunning, glossy finish.

The Pink Ivory comes from a beautiful and unique type of tree that can be found in South Africa. It is usually sold as turning stock or pen blanks because of its small size. The wood has a lovely pale to deep pink color, and some pieces may even have a curly figure. However, the color tends to fade to a golden hue as it ages.
